Audrey Houdini Gerten

This little naughty bird gave her mama a heart attack at Island View Resort during our big family vacation this summer.

Auddie Girl and I were having a nap. She was sleeping in the bottom bunk and I was in my bed.  The other family members were at a movie or fishing so just she and I were slumbering away peacefully.

All of a sudden after a solid 2 hour nap I hear an unfamiliar male voice yelling "hello" over and over again from the laundry room in the cabin.  The voice sounded quite concerned.  So I rush out of bed and there is a man and two women walking into the house with Audrey.  I'm like "WHAT??".  Apparently while we (I guess I) were slumbering Auddie got out of bed, went outside and WAS WALKING DOWN BY THE LAKE when these three people found her and tried to find her cabin.  Thankfully they had seen her up at our cabin and so knew she was part of our group but when they first brought her back up no one heard them ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door (I was slumbering, remember).

Finally they went back to the main office at the resort and called the emergency number that my dad had for our cabin.  They had to leave a message there (it was my dad's home phone - not sure how that would help in an emergency I told my dad seeing that his house is 2 hours from our resort - but whatevs).  When they couldn't get ahold of anyone they just decided to come in an look for someone.

So my baby was safe.  I was a wreck.  All the thoughts that kept going through my head . . . I cried for three hours thinking of the what if's.  I can't even post my thoughts here because any of those things could have happened.  I am so lucky and thankful that it ended the way it did.

I realize it's all my fault.  I'm the mom - I'm responsible.   But don't think I won't blame this on her when she's older!

Thank God my girl is ok!

Yikes! Did I ever tell you about the time we were at the KOA campground at Bear Lake last summer for my family reunion and Mack walked out onto the main road? We were in the office/store getting golf clubs to play mini-golf and Mack was playing with a ball. I thought Dani and Lily were watching him so I wasn't paying attention. He bounced the ball, it rolled outside, and he followed it down the hill right into 45mph traffic. I heard voices yelling outside but my brain didn't register anything until a lady called into the door, asking whose little boy this was. I stepped outside and there was a crowd, traffic was stopped, and my heart stopped as well. Once I realized what had happened I was so grateful my little boy was OK. But I also felt about 2 inches tall. My first instinct was to yell at Dani and Lily, but I knew that it was ultimately my responsibility to keep track of my own children.

It scared the crap out of me and I was so ashamed that I've never even told Dan it happened. So, join the club of near-misses as a mom. Love you!
